MEDIA RERLEASE

16 March 2012

Mistaken identity is the likely explanation concerning unconfirmed ractopamine and New Zealand beef

Beef + Lamb New Zealand Chief Executive, Scott Champion confirmed that there had been no official notification that ractopamine had been detected in New Zealand beef imports to Chinese Taipei, despite media claims to this effect.

“Ractopamine is not permitted for use in cattle in New Zealand and there are a number of explanations for the current reports of a detection.”

In addition to the feeding of ractopamine to cattle being against the law, almost all of New Zealand beef animals are exclusively pasture-fed, meaning that there is little opportunity for or commercial benefit from using these chemicals in our farming systems.

New Zealand exports substantial quantities of beef to the European Union and the People's Republic of China, both of which also have restrictions on ractopamine without having a single detection.

If samples were collected from markets, there is a significant possibility that there has been product mislabeling or mixing - for instance in the case of minced beef - or cross contamination between meat from different sources in cutting or preparation. In fact one of the original samples has already been found not to be of New Zealand origin.

New Zealand's compliance and verification systems are rigorous and have not shown any residues of this substance in New Zealand beef.

“We are firmly of the view that the presumptive positive in the remaining sample is not in beef sourced from New Zealand and there has most likely be a mixup in the sampling or testing of the product.”
